Biosphere Sustainability Certification

Tourism is one of the industries that brings the largest profit to economic and cultural sectors in cities all over the world. In Spain alone, tourism generate more than 145 billion Euro in 2019, a figure that has not stopped increasing despite the economic crisis. However it is important to ask ourselves to what extent it has been profitable to maintain and increase these figures considering the impacts on natural resources, consumption patterns, pollution and social systems.

Barcelona has seen significant tourism growth for almost three decades now, with tourism taking a key role in the growth of the city. However, in recent times the significant expansion of tourist activity in the city has ignited the debate about the importance of sustainable tourism practices for the benefit of the city.

This is why across spain is working on achieving the Biosphere Certification for destination Barcelona, aiming to work towards a sustainable and responsible planning and management of our activity. We know tourism will never be completely sustainable, as every industry has impacts, but we can all put our efforts towards a complete commitment to sustainability in tourism field.

Barcelona was the first urban destination to obtain the Biosphere Gold Destination certification. The Biosphere Responsible Tourism certification is granted by the Responsible Tourism Institute – an independent organisation. This is a prestigious certification that recognizes those within the international tourism industry who have made sustainable tourism management the focus of their activity.

To achieve the certification, companies should provide non-invasive goods and services that meet the goals of sustainable tourism – satisfying the needs of current customers while not compromising future generations. Being certified under Biosphere guarantees that there is a suitable balance regarding economic, environmental and the social-cultural aspects of a tourist destination. This balance means that the organisation, customers, society and the environment will all gain significant benefits. This means, we are working to keep providing quality service while granting environment or ocean around Barcelona does not get harmed.
