A little bit of history
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is the administrative body for association football in Europe and it is one of the most powerful of the six FIFA´s confederations internationally. The UEFA was founded on the 15th June 1954 in Basel and its current office is located in Nyon, Switzerland. It promotes club competitions such as the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League among other important competitions.
UEFA Champions League
It is an annual association football cup competition organised since 1955 for the top football clubs in Europe being one of the most prestigious football trophy in the world. The final of this competition is - along with the NFL's Super Bowl - the most watched annual sport event worldwide, with over 300 million viewers.
how does it work?
The top 3 teams of every national league are directly qualified for the Champions League group stage, while the fourth placed teams play in the playoffs to guarantee a spot there. There are 32 playing teams in this competition, divided into 8 groups with 4 teams in each group. During playoffs, only the top two teams of each group advance to the next round, while the third placed teams of the group have a direct spot in Europe League competition. Spain is one of the countries with the most representatives (4 teams) in this competition for this season 2016/2017. Lucky teams are Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid and Sevilla FC.
UEFA Europe League
It is the second most prestigious international football competition in Europe, organized by UEFA. The Europe League cup was played for the first time in season 1971-1972. The greatest champion of this competition is Sevilla FC (five times champion) showing the best era of Spanish football.
how does it work?
Both, the Champions League and Europe League have qualifying rounds before reaching the final tournament, which in both cases begins with a group stage. In the Europe League 48 teams are divided in 12 groups of four teams each one. After that, eight teams more will participate in this competition, those that are eliminated from the Champions League competition.
For direct qualification in Europe League the fifth and sixth placed teams in the national leagues (depending on the country) are selected for this competition. In some countries the sixth placed teams in national´s leagues play in the playoffs.
Regarding to these two tournaments, the Champions League competition is considered to be more important than the Europa League competition, not only because of the quality of football teams participating, but also because of the prize-money distributed among the clubs, apart from television rights that give great benefits to the teams involved. The champion of the first competition, in addition to having access to the final of the European Super Cup against the champion of the second tournament in importance, has also the opportunity to compete in the Club World Cup with champions from other continents or confederations.
