Football in Spain

Football has been an important part of Spain since the late 19th century, as British immigrant workers and Spanish students, after studying on the British Isles, imported this famous game. The oldest official Spanish football club, Huelva Recreation Club, was formed at the end of 1889 by British immigrants. Just one year later the first official football game took place in Seville. The opposing teams were Huelva Recreation Club and Sevilla FC, and most of the players on both teams were British. But that was just the beginning, it took almost 40 years before football become recognized as an official sport in Spain.

Nowadays, Spanish football is played in four professional leagues with promotion and relegation taking place at the end of each season. The season itself running between mid-August and mid-May. During this time each Saturday and Sunday sees over 100 professional games taking place across the country.

La Liga from the beginning up to now

La Liga, fully named Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División, is the men's top professional football division of the Spanish football league system and has been founded in 1927. It needed two years before ten teams have been selected to participate in the first La Liga 1929. Exactly ninety years later 20 teams are part of the season, which started this August.

The first eight seasons, after the league was born, were dominated by Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid, with Athletic as most successful team. But this has changed over the years, nowadays Real Madrid with 33 title is on top of the league, closely followed by FC Barcelona with 26 titles. Nevertheless, it seems like FC Barcelona comes closer and closer, since they have won the last two competitions and even four times in the last five years.

La Liga could not be compared with football leagues from other European countries because its clubs have won the most UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup titles. According to UEFA, it has been the top league in Europe over the last five years and it is one of the most famous sport leagues worldwide.

But the main question is: who will win La Liga 2019/20? Will it again be FC Barcelona or their rival Real Madrid, or neither of them? Find out while being live at the final, or any other match you are interested in, and write us a message to book your football package today!
